Host, “Phil Phillips Unleashed”
The host of exciting and informative outdoor television programming for 12 years, Phil currently headlines “Phil Phillips Unleashed” on the Sportsman Channel and actively promotes the sheer fun and excitement of hunting and shooting sports. He has field-tested archery and hunting products as a pro-staffer for numerous companies, including Easton, Mathews, Scent-Lok, HECS, Montana Decoy and Summit Tree Stands.
Prior to hosting outdoor television shows, Phil spent 20 years as a professional guide and outfitter specializing in archery hunts for his Colorado-based Phil’s Bowhunting Adventures beginning at age 18.
He guided clients to more than 500 big-game animals that have qualified for the record book. In 1992, Safari Club International honored him as North American bowhunting outfitter of the year.
As Phil packs his bow and guides other hunters on television for everything from Kansas whitetails to Western big game, he conveys that something good has taken place regardless of whether a game animal has been taken. He recalls the words of Fred Bear: “It makes no difference whether I got anything; success has to do with how the day was spent.” And like Bear, Phil says there is simply more fun in hunting with the added challenge of a bow than with the sureness of a gun—unless he is on the occasional muzzleloader or rifle hunt. Phil communicates that the anticipation is the essence of the hunt, and that success comes with being immersed in the challenge.
Phil enjoys sharing his hunting adventures with fellow bowhunters through his television show, website, hunting seminars and other personal appearances. He has worked closely with NRA Hunter Services, headlining NRA National Bowhunter Clinics and NRA Great American Hunters Tour events and has served as a judge for the NRA’s National Game Calling Competitions at NRA Annual Meetings. Whether addressing technique, equipment or safety and ethics, he is motivated by our hunting heritage and his love for the great outdoors.
In 2013, Phil married NRA’s Karen Mehall, senior editor of the association’s American Hunter magazine. They enjoy the synergy that comes from working together on his television show, gathering destination-and-adventure article and show material and in doing joint speaking engagements for groups such as the Dallas Safari Club, promoting women and families in the great outdoors and highlighting their love of hunting and how hunting brings people together.
Phil has been a Life member of the National Rifle Association since 1996, recognizing at an early age NRA’s leadership role in protecting the freedom to hunt and shoot—not just with firearms but with all hunting methods—and in spearheading America’s wildlife conservation efforts. He is also a Life member of Safari Club International, the North American Hunting Club and the Mule Deer Foundation.
Nationally noted bowhunter and outdoor communicator Phil Phillips grew up in a time when few hunted with a bow. With no mentor, his bowhunting was self-taught, starting with small game at age 10. Phil took his first deer with a rifle at age 12 and his first deer with a bow at age 15. In the more than three decades that followed, he has hunted across five continents, taking more than 200 big-game animals and 38 species worldwide.
